Kratom is an impressively large, long-lived, tropical evergreen tree,
classified in the Linnaean system under Division Magnoliophyta, Order
Gentianales, Family Rubiaceae, Genus *Mitragyna, *Species *speciosa,
*and Subspecies
Korth, after Pieter Korthals, the scientist who first formally identified it
early in the nineteenth century. Known in Thailand - its probable place of
origin - and nearby regions of Southeast Asia for millennia, its botany has
been studied only intermittently in the West since the early twentieth
century. In terms of sheer numbers of species, this plant Family is one of
the largest on earth. Other famous members include coffee, cinchona,
gardenia, and noni.
The Genus is named for the striking appearance of its yellow flowers, which
resemble bishop’s miters. Fresh, mature Kratom leaves are opposite, green,
and can grow quite large, over six inches long in many cases. It takes about
five years for trees to reach maturity, although growth continues for many
years after. Trees fifty feet tall are not uncommon. The appearance of the
leaves can vary greatly from one growing region to another and sometimes
even from one individual tree to another. Varieties are often - but not
always - defined this way. Leaf veins may be green, red, or white, and
margins can be smooth or serrated. Kratom trees grow best in very warm,
humid, rich soils and will not tolerate frost, drought, or high winds.
Kratom trees may be wild or cultivars. Unsurprisingly, they are quite
difficult to grow far outside their indigenous areas. Under such conditions,
periods of heavy leaf shedding that usually coincide with annual dry seasons
may cycle instead to times of relatively colder temperatures.
